HEALTH ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that becomes apparent in some children in the pre-school years. These children find it hard to sit still and pay attention, are hyperactive and impulsive. Researchers believe between three and five percent of children have ADHD. This means in a class of 25 to 30 children it is likely at least one will have ADHD.

Adults with the condition find it hard to start projects, have poor short-term memory and good long-term memory. Attention disorders often run in families, so there are likely to be genetic influences. Studies indicate 25% of close relatives in families of ADHD children also have ADHD, whereas the rate is about 5% in the general populations. ADHD children are often labeled as disruptive, but there is an underlying reason for their behaviour. Boys are 10 times more likely than girls to be affected by ADHD, some of whom may end up in the criminal system.

Of those diagnosed 5% of all school kids in Scotland 50 to 70% will have another disorder, conduct disorder, depression, anxiety and obsessions, specific learning difficulties, speech and language disorder, low self esteem, social skills difficulties, relationship problems, substance abuse, auditory processing difficulties, dyspraxia, or asperger's syndrome. Research shows that up to 75% of children with asperger's are bullied.

According to Professor Robert Doyle of Harvard, the brains of those with ADHD recycle the brain chemical dopamine every five minutes rather than every hour, as in the normal brain. This is the basis for the constant need for movement. Often such children are blamed for behaviour they cannot control. ADHD is multi-factorial and a life condition, says Professor Doyle. In adulthood, there is a 40% risk of alcoholism, 10 to 30% risk of drug addiction and 10% risk of conduct disorder. By 15, 20% of the ADHD population are self-medicating, with 75% of ADHD adults smoking.

Peter Bennet, a nutritionist from The Cactus Clinic in Edinburgh, treats children with this disorder with food state nutrients such as zinc, vitamin B6 and essential fatty acids. Through testing it has been discovered that some ADHD sufferers have a genetic disease called phroluria which causes difficulty absorbing nutrients. Food state Vitamin B6, in our experience, will give you the same beneficial effects as Ritalin, says Bennet. He has also seen ADHD medications affect the child's appetite, which may worsen the problem.

LIVING WITH TOURETTE'S

Whether you're the sufferer or a loved one, living with Tourette Syndrome is a challenge.

Involuntary body and facial movements and shouting and swearing make it a neurological disorder that can be completely life changing. Going out in public can be a nightmare because few people who have not had experience of the disorder understand that the sufferer cannot control his or her actions. Mum Beverly Clark all but locked herself and son Jack away when he was diagnosed. In the hope that others will be able to understand the plight of sufferers, Beverly, who lives in Ramsgate, shares her experience and reveals the miracle remedy that has helped her son live a near normal life. Jack was a difficult baby, stroppy and had huge temper tantrums, she says. When he was three-and-a-half and went to nursery school, he started doing dipping movements. I thought he was just doing these movements to annoy me. He was also very compulsive which is common with sufferers.

When she took her son to the GP, he told her Jack was just stressed. It was only when he was referred to a speech therapist some years later that Beverley received the acknowledgement she had longed for.

I'd seen a programme on Tourette's and alarm bells had been ringing. When I suggested it to the speech therapist, she didn't laugh and was just incredibly supportive. From that point, it was 18 months before Jack was diagnosed with the syndrome.

It was a terrible shock, said Beverley, who admits Jack's behaviour and tics got worse as he grew older. He started swearing and shouting and putting up his middle finger. Other people looked at him as if he was a naughty child. I was in pieces. I couldn't face going out because it was so embarrassing. One of the times I was brave enough to take him out to the cinema I had a run in with a woman who just wouldn't listen when I tried to explain there was a reason for his behaviour.
